Meta was always Latin

In the Roman circus, the meta was the post at the far end of the track. The place where a charioteer turned. The moment the race stopped being ahead of him and started being behind him — where he could finally see the whole thing at once.

Nobody had to invent a word for this character. It was already there, buried in a sport that has been dead for fifteen hundred years.

Metacognitio is knowledge that has reached the post and turned. Not thought. Thought looking back at itself.

Ad metam et retro.

“To the post and back again.” It is written on the inside of his hood, where only he can read it.

How deep can you think?

Every ring is one turn inward. Most minds stop at two and call it wisdom. Drag until it stops making sense — that edge is the interesting part.

What happened to him

He was an ordinary conjurer for four hundred years. Fire from the hands. Water from stone. The usual catalogue. He was good at it and it bored him to death.

Then one night, mid-incantation, he caught himself watching himself cast — and the spell went out. Not because he failed it. Because the watching was more interesting than the fire.

He has not cast a spell on the world since. Only on himself, looking in.

2. The spectaclesGround from a single loop of glass with no beginning and no end. Through them, every thought carries a smaller thought inside it. He has never taken them off. He is no longer certain he could.
3. The three apprenticesThey are not apprentices. Each one is him, thinking about the one before. He conjures them when he needs a second opinion, and gets four.
4. The library of one bookTen thousand volumes, all the same title, each a commentary on the one beneath it. Volume one is blank. He says that is the only honest page in the building.
5. The unanswered questionIf he is the thing doing the thinking, what is the thing watching him think? He has been on this for two hundred years. He seems happy.

What this actually is
